Move Review: “If I Stay” (PG-13)

Warner Bros.(NEW YORK) -- Great! Another movie adapted from a young adult novel, scientifically designed to make teenage girls and 40-something movie critics cry.  I’m speaking of If I Stay, starring the irrepressibly talented Chloe Grace Moretz as Mia, a teen cello prodigy who has one glaring issue: she can’t be much of a prodigy if she’s dead.
When we first meet Mia, it’s a snowy day in Portland, Oregon. Her father (Joshua Leonard), a rocker-turned-English teacher, and little brother (Jakob Davies) , get to stay home because of the bad weather, so Mia’s super-cool mother (Mireille Enos) calls in sick so the whole family can hang out together.
On this day, Mia has something else on her mind: the possibility of an acceptance letter from the prestigious Julliard School arriving in the mail.  In a wonderful scene, her parents sweet talk Mia into taking a family road trip. It’s a fatal mistake.
There’s a car accident, and Mia’s soul wakes up, but her body doesn’t -- she’s suffered what could be life-ending injuries.  At this point, she’s not sure how badly her family was injured.  As she watches the doctors perform surgery on her, she starts to recall the most important moments of her life.  These are the memories that will give her the strength to stay with the living, reclaiming her body and life.  But the question is, will the memories provide enough strength for her, when it seems all else is lost?
Playing a major role in Mia’s decision is Adam (Jamie Blackley), the hunky high school rocker who falls for Mia when he notices her by herself in a music classroom, getting lost in her cello.  Mia recalls their meeting and courtship as they become an adorable couple: the punk rock kid and the classical musician.   But nothing is ever perfect, especially two acts into a movie.  As Adam’s band becomes more successful, he’s around less, and Mia develops a desire to take her talents beyond Portland, to New York City’s Julliard, on the other side of the country.
If I Stay wants you to weep -- and you will.  My issue is there should’ve been even more weeping, and less manipulation. But I suspect the majority of the audience, especially the pre-teen and teen boys and girls who’ve read the Gayle Forman bestselling novel on which the movie’s based, won’t really care --  nor will a few uneven performances sully their love for a movie about a girl whose soul may be saved by a cute boy with a guitar.
Three out of five stars.

Pamela Anderson Refuses Ice Bucket Challenge, Kristen Stewart & Nicholas Hoult Accept

iStock/Thinkstock(LOS ANGELES) -- One celebrity who’s not taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge? Pamela Anderson. The Baywatch actress and staunch animal rights activist said she will not be taking part in the challenge because of the ALS Association’s use of animal testing in its research.

“I enjoy a good dare -- it’s always good to bring awareness -- in fun, creative ways. I don’t want to take away from that, but it had me thinking,” she wrote on Facebook. “Digging a bit deeper I found that we may not be aligned in our messages. So…I thought instead, I’d challenge ALS to stop animal testing.”

She also posted a picture of herself holding a piece of paper with “Stop Animal Testing” written on it.

Meanwhile, Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult were more than game for the challenge. They did make sure to conserve water, though.

Stewart and Hoult, who co-star in the upcoming film Equals, dunked their heads in buckets of water along with pal Scott Fahrendorf. "In good faith you must believe this was all done with dirty bath water,” Stewart said. “Please be considerate of California water conservation."

Stewart had been nominated for the challenge by Anne Hathaway. Stewart, who recently appeared in the “Just One of the Guys” music video for Jenny Lewis, nominated the singer along with her video co-star Brie Larson. She also nominated fellow Equals co-stars Jacki Weaver and Max Thieriot.

Hoult -- a.k.a. Jennifer Lawrence's ex -- nominated his A Single Man co-star Colin Firth, his Kill Your Friends co-star Craig Roberts, and his Skins co-star Joe Dempsie.

As of Thursday, the Ice Bucket Challenge had raised 41.8 million dollars for the ALS Association over the past three-plus weeks.

"Hercules" Star Kevin Sorbo Rants Against Ferguson Protesters, Then Apologizes

Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Former Hercules star Kevin Sorbo is facing criticism after he posted a Facebook rant Wednesday against protesters in Ferguson, Missouri, where a white police officer fatally shot unarmed black teen, Michael Brown. The outspoken political conservative called the demonstrators “animals” and “losers.”

"Ferguson riots have very little to do with the shooting of the young man," Sorbo reportedly wrote in a post that has apparently since been taken down. "It is an excuse to be the losers these animals truly are. It is a tipping point to frustration built up over years of not trying, but blaming everyone else, The Man, for their failures.”

He also took the opportunity to criticize President Obama in his tirade. “Hopefully this is a reminder to the African Americans (I always thought we just Americans. Oh, well.) that their President they voted in has only made things worse for them, not better,” he wrote.

His comments were met with backlash and accusations of racism, prompting the actor to remove the post and issue an apology Thursday on Facebook. He wrote in part, "Okay....I stand humiliated and humbled. My most sincere apologies for my post on the events in Ferguson. I posted out of frustration and anger over the violence and looting. My words were never meant to hurt the African-American community. My use of the word 'losers' was directed at those doing the looting and vandalising and violence toward others."

Wilmer Valderrama Writes B-Day Message for Demi Lovato

Jeff Vespa/Getty Images for Topshop Topman(NEW YORK) -- Wilmer Valderrama wrote his girlfriend Demi Lovato a sweet birthday message on Instagram this week.

The 34-year-old posted a pic of the two wearing matching holiday hoodies and laughing. "Wishing you happy birthday would never come close to all the inspiring things I wish for your life," he wrote alongside the photo. "We laugh our a**es off. While we do all we can to better everything around us. Love you through all."

Lovato, 22, wrote a similar birthday message to Valderrama back in January, calling him "the funniest, most inspiring, incredible man I know." She added, "You truly are a light to this world and to my life."

The two first got together in 2010. After a brief split, they were back in a relationship the following year.

Pierce Brosnan Regrets Turning Down Batman Role

ABC/Fred Lee(NEW YORK) -- Pierce Brosnan admitted one of his career regrets in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session Wednesday. The Bond actor revealed he once turned down the role of Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 film.

During the online Q&A, a fan asked: "You were a great Bond but I always thought you’d make for a great Batman. Were you ever approached for that role?"

He answered that he was, but at the time he just couldn’t get on board with a superhero who “wore his underpants outside his pants.”

“That was my foolish take on it. It was a joke, I thought,” the 61-year-old said.

The role of Burton’s Batman ultimately went to Michael Keaton.

Brosnan’s latest film, The November Man, hits theaters next Wednesday.

Movie Review: "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For" (R)

Distributor: Weinstein / Dimension(NEW YORK) -- It took nine years, but we finally have Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the sequel to 2005's ground-breaking Sin City.  Those nine years have given Hollywood and the gaming industry ample time to replicate, enhance and proliferate the original aesthetic to the point that what was once so eye-popping is now boring. The solution?  Apparently, take that same look and produce it in 3D.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For features some familiar characters from the original, starting with Mickey Rourke's Marv.  After Eva Green's Ava (we'll get to her in a minute), he's the second-most visually-arresting character in the movie -- he looks like he was carved out of solid rock.  Marv also introduces us to the action when he wakes up on the street next to a dead guy after a helluva bloody night, of which he has little recollection.  Like the first film, Marv narrates his own story, retelling the events that led to this moment, and showing us he's a cold-blooded killing machine with a heart of gold.

Also returning is Jessica Alba's stripper, Nancy; the specter of Bruce Willis' hard-boiled cop, Hartigan; and Powers Boothe, whose portrayal of Senator Roark is one of the movie's true highlights, so palpable and absolute is his brand of evil.

Speaking of evil, let's talk about Eva Green, whose Ava is the dame to kill for from the title.  Green is ideally cast: as she recently proved in 300: Rise of an Empire, she's the perfect combination of deadly and gorgeous.  She's got her ex-lover -- newcomer Josh Brolin's private eye, Dwight -- wrapped around her monochrome little finger and she literally is going to bleed him for all he's worth.  You may have heard that Green spends most of this movie naked.  She in fact spends more time naked in this movie than she would if she lived in a nudist resort, which many will consider a very good thing.

In another storyline, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a slick, cocky gambler named Johnny, hell-bent on embarrassing Senator Roark in a game of poker.  It turns out to be a very painful decision.

All of the performances are fine and the decision to go 3D keeps the visuals tantalizing, but Sin City: A Dame to Kill For would've been considerably more entertaining had it been a music video or videogame.  The through-line connecting all of these stories is tenuous at best and the violence soon becomes boring, simply because we never care enough about these characters to give a lick what happens to them.

Two-and-a-half out of five stars.

Nick Cannon Confirms He and Mariah Carey Are Living Apart

ABC/ Jeff Neira(LOS ANGELES) -- On Thursday Nick Cannon discussed the rumors that his marriage with wife Mariah Carey is on the rocks.

"There is trouble in paradise," he told The Insider. "We have been living in separate houses for a few months."

He shot down rumors that the problems are the result of infidelity on his part and added that his children come first, no matter what he and the Grammy winner plan to do with their relationship.

"My main focus is my kids," he added.

Cannon, 33, and Carey, 44, married in 2008 and welcomed fraternal twins in 2011 -- daughter Monroe and son Moroccan.

This past May, the couple celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary and around that time, he addressed the rumors to Parade magazine, and took a much different tone, saying there was no issue in the marriage.

"You kind of have to ignore it because every week it's something different, and if you paid attention to it, it actually probably would start really affecting you," he added. "It's kind of humorous, really. It couldn't be further off from the truth, and it really affects the credibility of the so-called newspapers."

Carey's rep told ABC News, "I am not commenting on Mariah's personal life but Mariah is focusing on her children and her upcoming tour."

Beyonce’s Mom Quashes Divorce Rumors: 'Everything’s Perfect'

Eric McCandless/CBS(NEW YORK) -- If mom knows best, then Beyonce and Jay Z are doing just fine.

Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles, took a moment Wednesday to quash rumors that the couple is headed for divorce.

Approached by a TMZ cameraman as she was leaving a lunch date with Beyonce’s former bandmate Kelly Rowland in Los Angeles, Knowles said, “Haters going to be haters and there’s nothing we can do about that.”

Asked if everything is fine between Beyonce and Jay Z, Knowles replied, “Everything’s perfect.”

She also admitted she doesn’t bother reading the gossip about her daughter and son-in-law.

“I just don’t even read the bull, you know?” Knowles said.

Rumors of trouble in the couple’s six-year marriage have been circulating since Jay Z’s infamous elevator dust-up with Beyonce’s sister, Solange, in May.

Since then, there have been reports that Beyonce had her IV engagement tattoo removed from her ring finger, that she changed lyrics to her breakup ballad “Resentment” while on tour with Jay Z, that she’s shopping for her own New York City apartment and even that she turned to pal Gwyneth Paltrow for advice on “conscious uncoupling.”

The couple hasn’t commented on any of the rumors, but Beyonce has posted plenty of snaps of her with Jay Z and their daughter Blue Ivy.

Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp Split

Ian Gavan/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- John Mellencamp and his longtime girlfriend, actress Meg Ryan, apparently have called it quits.

ABC News confirmed that their long-distance relationship -- Ryan is based in New York City while Mellencamp lives in Indiana -- proved to be too taxing for the couple.

Ryan, 52, and Mellencamp, 62, were first photographed together at the start of 2011, not long after the rocker split from his wife of 18 years, Elaine Irwin. In the years that followed, they were sometimes photographed together in Manhattan, with Mellencamp even spotted holding hands with Ryan's 8-year-old daughter, Daisy. However, last year, he told Rolling Stone, "I'm not leaving Indiana. I'm going to die here."

"I'm too sensitive to live [in New York City]," he said. "I can't see poor people. I can't see the suffering. I can't see the trash on the streets."

A rep for Ryan did not respond to a request for comment. A rep for Mellencamp declined to comment.

Julianne Hough Joins "Dancing with the Stars" Judges' Panel

ABC/Adam Taylor(LOS ANGELES) -- Two-time Dancing with the Stars champ and former pro Julianne Hough is trading in her dancing shoes to join the show's judges' panel. On Thursday's Good Morning America, Hough explained why she's returning to the ABC dancing competition, which will also see her brother Derek competing this season.

"Well, Dancing with the Stars has always been apart of my family. I mean, that's where it all began for me so it just kind of made sense," she explained. "And when I think about what Derek and I just did on tour, with Move Live on Tour, reconnecting with the fans and just the people that have supported me from day one from Dancing with the Stars, it just felt like the right time and the right kind of opportunity."

Hough won't be replacing anyone. Instead, she'll be joining returning judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.

Hough said "the camaraderie between the judges" is what she's most looking forward to next seasonBut will it be tough judging her brother Derek and his celebrity partner on the dance floor?

"It's not necessarily about Derek and the pro dancer. It's about a collaboration," she said, after admitting she can be hard on her brother. "It's the team effort. It's what they're doing as a partnership and really the celebrity and what they can do to improve each week."

ABC's Dancing with the Stars returns Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Report: Mariah Carey-Nick Cannon Divorce a 'Done Deal'

Andrew H. Walker/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The speculation that Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's marriage has fallen apart is intensifying.

TMZ is now reporting that a divorce is a "done deal" after the two allegedly separated in May. Reportedly, their lawyers have been negotiating a custody agreement in regards to the couple's three-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan.

TMZ claims Mariah is upset with Nick because he's constantly working, thus making him absent from their children's lives. In turn, Nick is allegedly frustrated that Mariah surrounds herself with "yes men."

Earlier this week, the New York Post's Page Six reported that Nick and Mariah are separating after six years of marriage.

Jay Z and Beyonce Cleared of Violating US Sanctions in Cuba Trip

Image Courtesy Cliff Lipson/CBS(WASHINGTON) -- It's been determined Jay Z and Beyonce did not violate U.S. sanctions when they made a trip to Cuba to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary in 2013, Time magazine reports.

The United States Treasury Department's inspector general's office made an announcement Wednesday. It concludes that the Office of Foreign Assets Control, which issues licenses to organizations that sponsor educational exchange programs in Cuba, was “reasonable” for having passed on a formal investigation into the couple’s visit.

In April 2013, Republican Senator Marco Rubio and Representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart, who are Cuban-Americans, raised concerns that the Obama administration wasn’t properly enforcing the travel regulations between the U.S. and Cuba.

At the time, the Treasury Department had given Jay and Bey clearance to make the trip.

In response to the accusations, Jay Z released the song "Open Letter," in which he rapped, “Obama said, ‘Chill, you gonna get me impeached. You don’t need this s**t anyway, chill with me on the beach.’”
