News for Monday 042114

By Dave Graichen

A Pineville man was killed Sunday morning when a pickup being driven by a Boyce man crossed the center line of Bayou Rapides Road and hit him head on. State police report 50 year old David Fowler died at the scene of the wreck. The driver of the pickup, 30 year old Daniel Verzwyvelt II received moderate injuries. Routine toxicology tests are pending, as are charges.

For the first time in  the  state's  history,  there are two-million people  working  in  Louisiana.  There are 35-thousand  more  people employed,  compared  to  this time last  year.  Louisiana  Workforce

Commission spokesperson Tom  Guarisco  says  the  number  of working Louisianans should continue to grow. In a statement, Governor Jindal said surpassing the two million mark is  proof  that overhauling the ethics code, revamping the workforce training system and cutting taxes is paying off.

The 2nd-half of the legislative session begins as legislators return to  Baton Rouge after an extended break for Easter. So far lawmakers have  talked about Common Core, guns, abortion, the levee lawsuit against oil  companies and chicken boxing. But Council for a Better Louisiana  President Barry Erwin says the focus will soon turn to the budget.

An industry group has formed to lobby lawmakers to support legislation  that would legalize medical marijuana which is scheduled to come up  for debate this week. Louisiana Cannabis Industry Association  spokesman and lobbyist Jesse McCormick believes support for the  legalization of cannabis for medical purposes is growing in Louisiana. McCormick says while Louisiana citizens seem to support medical  marijuana legalization, he's unsure on lawmakers stance just yet. He

says he believes the support is there, but some legislators have a  tough time with it.

A  new  statewide  poll  on this year's US Senate race shows Senator Mary Landrieu leads three  other  republicans.  In the survey of 538 voters,  Landrieu  had  40-percent,  Congressman  Bill  Cassidy  had 35-percent,  retired Air Force Colonel Rob Manness at  four  percent and state representative Paul Hollis at three-percent. 18-percent  of  the  respondents  said they were undecided  for  the primary.

The  latest  campaign finance report  for  US  Representative  Vance McAllister shows  the  embattled Congressman only has eight-thousand dollars on hand. Which means  that  McAllister  may have to fund his own campaign, if he seeks re-election.

Political analyst Elliot Stonecipher says Republican Congressman John  Fleming is in good shape to be re-elected to a fourth term. His latest  campaign fundraising report shows the doctor from Minden has over one-  million dollars on hand. There is speculation Shreveport Mayor Cedric  Glover may challenge Fleming, but Stonecipher doesn't see it happening.  Fleming raised 405-thousand dollars during the first quarter of 2014 and  Stonecipher says there isn't another candidate out there who can raise  that type of cash quickly

The P-G-A Tour returns to Louisiana this week as round one of the Zurich  Classic of New Orleans will get underway on Thursday at the T-P-C of  Louisiana in Avondale. The Fore Kids Foundation is the producer of the  tournament and C-E-O Fore Kids, Steve Worthy, says this year's field  features 16 former major winners, plus other stars on the tour.
